In Victoria, the probationary license is categorized as P1 and P2. You should have completed at least 18 years and if you are less than 21 years old, complete the below steps to procure a P1 license.

  • Complete a minimum of 12 months with the learner permit
  • Complete 120 hours of supervised driving, including night driving of 20 hours.
  • The Driving test clearance.
  • Eyesight test clearance.
  • Hazard perception test clearance.

There are certain restrictions while driving with a P1 license as below:

  • Carry the driving license always when driving
  • Display Red 'P' plates on the front and back of your vehicle.
  • Blood alcohol concentration should be zero.
  • Do not use mobile of any kind, including GPS.

 

Probationary license P2 (green P):

Restrictions for P2 licenses are a little lesser than for P1. You will have to display a Green 'P' plate on the front and back of your vehicle. If you are less than 21 years old and completed a minimum of 12 months in red P (P1) without any incidents, then you will be promoted to P2 without any additional actions.

P2 probationary license can be procured if you are ageing between 21 to 24. You have to clear the below steps:

  • Complete a minimum of 6 months with the learner permit.
  • Driving test clearance.
  • Eyesight test clearance.
  • Hazard perception test clearance.

If you are aged between over 25 and trying to procure a P2 probationary license, then you to clear the below steps:

  • Complete a minimum of 3 months with the learner permit.
  • Driving test clearance.

According to the above, if you have completed the learner permit period after the age of 21, then you do not have to get a P1 license; instead, you can directly progr4ess to Probationary P2 license.

While holding a Probationary license (P1 or P2), certain vehicles are prohibited from using for a drive. These are the vehicles that meet the below criteria:

  • The power-to-weight ratio per tonne should not be more than 130 KW
  • Cars that are listed in the Victorian government prohibited vehicles list.
  • Vehicles that are modified from the original manufactured state to boost the performance or to enhance the looks.

These restrictions are not applicable if the Probationary license holder is supervised by a full driver license holder sitting beside him.

Overseas driver license:

If you are living in Victoria or will be living for more than six months, you will have to convert your overseas driver's license to a Victorian driving license.

If you are visiting Victoria for less than six months, you can drive with your Overseas driver's license or Overseas learner permit.
